Completion of CTU Rehabilitation in Kenema, Sierra Leone
The rehabilitation of the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) at Kenema Government Hospital has been successfully completed, marking a significant step in strengthening the hospital’s capacity to respond to infectious diseases.
The rehabilitation project addressed long-standing infrastructure challenges and operational gaps to create a safer environment for research staff, study participants, and collaborators within the facility.
Key improvement includes:
- Replacement of deteriorated roofing with durable aluminum sheets
- Installation of new ceilings, partitions, and non-slip floor tiles
- Full rewiring of electrical systems and upgrades to lighting and fittings
- Plumbing repairs and new sanitary facilities
- Installation of split-unit air conditioners in key offices
- Painting of internal and external walls
- Construction and demarcation of paved pedestrian walkways
With all structural, electrical, plumbing, and finishing works complete, the rehabilitation progress reached 100% completion.
The upgraded facility is expected to enhance infection prevention measures, improve safety and working conditions for research staff, and further support the ongoing critical research efforts as KGH continues its vital role as a frontline research institution in Sierra Leone’s fight against infectious disease.
